Vase and beautiful bouquet of flowers - Court Florist Christchurch

People order same day flowers for all kinds of reasons. Flowers to celebrate a new addition to the family, a new job, to send love and best wishes, congratulations, commiserations, and condolences – we see it all when we are making a flower delivery Christchurch and beyond.

Despite the variety of reasons for being given flowers, many recipients ask the same question, ‘What shall I put them in?’. The temptation is to use the nearest and most accessible vase to hand, but we urge you not to! Read on to learn how to choose the perfect vase for your bouquet.

Tip 1: Choose a vase for the flowers and foliage

Just as flowers are visually diverse, so are the best vases to use. The long-stemmed elegance of gladioli, lilies and sunflowers are complemented by the structure and control of a column vase. Whereas the shorter-stemmed large headed flowers of roses, hydrangea and peonies suit the voluptuous shape of an hour-glass vase. Be led by nature’s shapes; however, that’s not to say you shouldn’t experiment. For example, roses in a rectangular vase look fabulous in a modern interior.

Tip 2: Choose a vase for the height of the stems

When it comes to choosing the perfect vase for your flowers, your first thought should be about the vase’s proportions in relation to the flower arrangement, size matters. As a rule of thumb, the length of the flower stems should only be one and a half to two times the height of your vase.

Tip 3: Choose a vase for the opening of the vase

Not only can the wrong height of the vase diminish the beauty of the bouquet, so can an ill-chosen opening. Too wide and it won’t give the stems adequate support and you risk losing the shape of the arrangement. Too narrow, and the design will be constrained and you risk damaging the stems and limiting the flowers’ life. The ideal opening size allows some movement while retaining the shape of the bouquet.

Tip 4: Choose a vase for the location

Where you choose to place your bouquet will impact whether the vase is the right choice. We’ve written before about where best to keep flowers fresher for longer, (click here to read the article), but where you are going to display flowers will also influence the style of vase you should choose. Table vases and their bouquets are typically smaller, whereas if you have a big and abundant flower arrangement, you need a vase and space large enough to accommodate it and allow it to command all the attention.

Tip 5: Choose a vase because you love it

Sometimes we have things in our homes that are not the most fashionable or follow any rule in an interior style bible, but we just love them, and do you know what? They are often the most precious items we own. So, if you have Grandma’s old vase that’s seen better days, but you can remember her putting flowers in it, or you have the emergency vase your partner had to buy when your child was born – use it and celebrate the memories with your new flowers.

When you’re hosting a celebration, whether it’s an elegant dinner, a birthday brunch, or a festive Christmas party, you can rely on flowers to set the tone. They bring life, fragrance, and colour to your home, elevating it from the everyday to somewhere even more special. As any experienced florist in Christchurch will tell you, floral styling is about more than simply decoration, it’s about creating atmosphere, emotion, and memory. Aside from in a vase, you may be wondering how to display fresh flowers. With years of experience between us, the creative team at Court Florist have put our heads together to define the most inspiring ways to incorporate flowers into your party décor: Create an entrance that wows Although they shouldn’t, first impressions matter, and your doorway is where the celebration begins. Welcome guests with a burst of flowers that captures the mood of your event. Think lush orchids, fragrant roses, or vibrant seasonal flowers . A wreath on the door or garland draped around the doorframe instantly signal that this is a special occasion. If time is tight, order same day flower delivery Christchurch to have your chosen flowers arrive fresh and ready to display. As local florists, Court Florist can create custom entrance pieces to perfectly match your party’s theme and colourway. Transform your table with flowers A well-designed floral centrepiece is the heart of any party table. Choose flowers that complement your décor. Think soft blush tones for elegant dinners, or bold sunflowers and dahlias for relaxed, outdoor gatherings. Mixing textures (like eucalyptus, berries, and delicate flowers) adds richness and dimension. For a cohesive look, echo smaller arrangements along the table or scatter single stems in bud vases. Pair your flowers with candles or fairy lights for evening events to enhance that soft, ambient glow. Hosting a Christmas party? Add a few sprigs of pine and clusters of berries to your Christmas flowers arrangement for a festive flower display. And if you’re after something show-stopping, Court Florist creatives can craft bespoke table designs tailored to the space, for a real touch of floral luxury. Dress the bar or buffet Your drink station or buffet table deserves floral attention too. A few thoughtfully placed posies instantly elevate even the simplest setup. Try weaving long stem flowers through a garland that runs along the bar or tucking small posies between serving platters. For a creative twist, float flower heads (like hydrangeas or garden roses) in wide glass bowls of water, very simple yet striking. Or freeze edible petals into ice cubes for an extra touch that will get everyone talking. Calendula, borage, nasturtiums, and lavender are always popular. From centrepieces to ice cube surprises, flowers bring joy. For the freshest, most exquisite flower arrangements, source locally from the best florist in Christchurch – field fresh, hand selected flowers. At Court Florist on Victoria Street, we’re renowned for creating custom flower designs, so if you would like any advice or guidance about the best flowers to use to support your vision you are welcome to visit, order flowers online or call 03 379 8255.
